Abstract
1,239,323. Liquefied gas storage containers. INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. 5 March, 1970 [10 March, 1969], No. 12519/69. Heading F4P. [Also in Division F2] A support tie for a low-temperature body, e.g. a vessel filled with a liquefied gas such as liquid helium, suspended in an outer container in which a vacuum is maintained, comprises a series of members arranged so that their thermal contractions compensate each other to minimize overall thermal contraction of the tie over a large temperature drop. The ends of the tie are ball-and-socket couplings 1, 13. The load is transmitted via a stainless steel cable 2, a stainless steel compression tube 5, an annular block 8 of a material having a large coefficient of thermal expansion and a low coefficient of thermal conductivity, and equispaced parallel wires 10. The block 8 is a plastics material filled with glass or carbon fibre.
