Abstract
1,239,265. Polymerization of cyclic sulphides INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS. 29 Nov., 1968 [1 Dec., 1967], No. 56811/68. Heading C3R. Cyclic sulphides of formula in which R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are hydrogen atoms or optionally substituted hydrocarbon radicals are polymerized by contacting with a catalyst selected from: (A) a reaction product of a compound with a compound YOM<SP>1</SP>Z in which M is a trivalent metal and M<SP>1</SP> a divalent metal, Z is either OR<SP>7</SP> or an acyloxy radical; one of the radicals X and Y is acyl and the other R<SP>8</SP>; R<SP>5</SP> to R<SP>8</SP> are monovalent hydrocarbon radicals, or (B) a catalyst obtained by hydrolysis of a Meerwein complex M<SP>3</SP>[M<SP>2</SP>(OR<SP>9</SP>) 4 ] 2 or a mixture of alcohols M<SP>3</SP>(OR<SP>9</SP>) 3 and M<SP>2</SP>(OR<SP>9</SP>) 2 ; M<SP>2</SP> is a trivalent metal from Groups III to VIII of the Mendeleef Periodic Table or As, Sb or Bi, M<SP>3</SP> is a divalent metal from Group II of the Mendeleef Periodic Table or with an atomic number 22 to 29 and R<SP>9</SP> is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical. R<SP>1</SP> to R<SP>4</SP> may be halogenated or alkoxylated derivatives of hydrocarbon radicals. I may be copolymerized with cyclic ethers: in which R<SP>10</SP> to R<SP>13</SP> are hydrocarbon radicals optionally substituted by halogen or alkoxy radicals. Polymerization may take place at - 30‹ to +200‹ C. using 0À001-10% by wt. of catalyst (expressed as metal) with respect to the monomer(s). The use of the above catalysts for the polymerization of cyclic ethers is described and claimed in Specification 1,150,665.
