A heat exchanger or a tube unit for a heat exchanger e.g. in a steam generator operating with liquid sodium or a heat exchanger in which CO 2 is heated by liquid sodium, comprises a tube 1 for a heat-transferring medium which has at least one external recess 2 of channel section within which a tube 3 for the heat-absorbing material is nested, the tube 3 having at least over the area of contact a profile corresponding to the recess. The area of contact of the tube 3 does not exceed more than half its circumference. The tube 1 may be formed of an elongated panel or a duct having planar faces, the recesses being arranged transversely of the longitudinal axis of the panel or duct and the tube 3 being of sinuous form.
