In a facing head, including a main body 10 for attachment to a rotary part 14 of a machine tool and a cutting tool holder 40 movable relative to the body in a direction transverse to the axis of rotation of the rotary part 14 and hence of the facing head, the tool holder is moved by a threaded shaft 44 which is arranged transversely of the axis of rotation, engages a threaded bore in the tool holder and is rotatable by hydraulic means to traverse the tool holder. The tool holder comprises a tool carrying spindle 41 secured by a bolt 42 to the tool holder body and the shaft 44 is rotatable either by a key engaging the end of the shaft adjacent a graduated dial 45 or by the hydraulic means. The latter comprises a manually movable displacer piston (21) (Fig. 2, not shown) connected through a conduit (32), an annular passage 19 between the rear 11 of the main body 10 and a fixed but relatively rotatable sealed ring 22 and one or two passages 56 in the main body to one or two chambers 55, each chamber containing a piston 54. One or two toothed wheels 47 are secured to the shaft 44, each wheel being engaged by a spring-loaded panel 48 and being in frictional engagement with a member 61 having a dog 52 engageable by a plunger 53 of a piston 54. When two wheels 47 are provided, the pawls are oppositely disposed but when only one is provided the pawl is reversible by a handle 51. On movement of the displacer piston the, or a selected, piston 54 is displaced moving a dog 52 and hence rotating the shaft 44, or, if a single wheel 47 is provided and the pawl is set for anticlockwise rotation (Fig. 5) a spring-loaded plunger 57 moves the dog to rotate the shaft 44 on withdrawal of the plunger 53.
