An hydraulically operated tool turret for indexing and locking a shaft carrying a plurality of tool holders 28 comprises an hydraulic cylinder 1 with hollow piston 10 therein and through which extends the shaft 6, a member 17 located in the piston is axially and rotatably movable on the shaft under hydraulic pressure when fluid is admitted to either of the ports 3 and 4 in the cylinder assembly. In operation hydraulic pressure moves the piston axially of the shaft 6 to engage a dog clutch constituted by engaging portion on the end of the member 17 and a member 23 secured to the shaft 6. Further axial displacement of the piston 10 causes axial displacement of the shaft, to disengage a further dog clutch 7, 8 until a thrust bearing 22 on the shaft abuts the end member 5 of the cylinder. Continued hydraulic pressure moves the piston relative to the shaft 6 and causes release of the spring ball locking means 18, 19 and 20 and the rotary movement of the member 17 by a roller 15 carried on the piston and engaging in a helical slot 16 in the member 17. The rotation of the shaft effects the indexing of the tool holders to present a fresh tool to the operative position where it is retained by the spring and ball 18, 20 engaging in the detent 29 in the member 17. The reversing of the fluid flow effects the reengagement of the dog clutch 7 and 8 and the subsequent disengagement of the clutch 17, 25 and the ball 18 from the detent 29 whereby the piston and member are returned to their original position, the spring ball locking means subsequently engaging in the detent 20.
