Abstract

For use in a turning centre, a turret has a plurality of radial and/or axial driven tool holders 18, 19 on indexable turret part 2 and an indexing mechanism, selective drive of the tool holders 18, 19 and actuation of the indexing part 2 are achieved from a common drive 6, 7, 8, 9 through an axially movable gear 10, 11, 12 which is movable between a first axial position in which it engages gear 25 to index part 2 and a second axial position in which it engages gears 22, 25 to drive tool holders 18, 19. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in turrets for turning centres Introduction This invention relates to improvements in turrets for turning centres in which the turret has a plurality of driven tool holders and an indexing mechanism.
Background art It is the usual practice in rotating tool turrets in turning centres for the drive mechanism for the tool holders to be entirely separate from the drive mechanism which effects indexing. This approach complicates the construction of the turrent with the increased likelihood of malfunction.
Object of the invention It is the main object of this invention to provide, in the turret of a turning centre, a simplified drive mechanism for driving the tool holders and indexing.
Statements of invention According to the present invention there is provided, for a turning centre, a turret having a plurality of driven tool holders and an indexing mechanism, in which selective drive of the tool holders and actuation of the indexing mechanism are achieved from a common drive through an axially movable gear engageable selectively with a gear driving one of the tool holders or a gear driving the indexing mechanism.
Movement of the axially movable gear may be achieved hydraulically.
The invention also includes the axially movable gear as aforesaid having a shank rotatably mounted in the piston of a piston and cylinder assembly which effects axial movement of the gear.
Further, the invention includes a turret as aforesaid in which the indexable part of the turret is positioned relative to the fixed part of the turret by a faced tooth coupling arranged so that, when selectively engaged, the axially movable gear is in register for engagement with the gear driving one of the tool holders.
Drawing One embodiment of turret in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the figure is a longitudinal sectional view through the turret.
Specific description The turret illustrated in the drawing has a fixed part 1 and an indexable part 2 positioned relative to each other by the engagement of a faced tooth coupling 3. This coupling 3 is held in engagement by hydraulic pressure within chamber 4 which, when relieved and hydraulic pressure applied to chamber 5, enables the indexable part 2 of the turret to move to the right as seen in the drawing thereby disengaging the coupling 3 and enabling indexing to take place as hereinafter described.
A turret drive motor (not shown) drives shaft 6 which, through gears 7 and 8, drives gear 9. In sliding engagement with gear 9 is gear 10 carried by shank 11 of axially movable gear 12. The shank 11 is rotatably mounted through needle bearings 13 in the piston 14 of a piston and cylinder assembly including cylinder 15. Hydraulic power applied selectively to chambers 16 and 17 causes axial movement of piston 14 and hence axially movable gear 11, 12 within cylinder 15.
The indexable part 2 of the turret is provided with a plurality of radial tool holders 18 and axial tool holders 19. Each radial tool holder 18 is driven through bevel gears 20 and 21 from internal gear 22.
Each of the axial tool holders 19 is driven through gears 23 and 24 from internal gear 25.
The gear 12 is selectively engageable with any one of the internal gears 22 or 25 to effect drive of a selected tool holder 18 or 19. Such drive is effected by hydraulic pressure being applied to chamber 16 thus causing the gear 11, 12 to move to the right as seen in the drawing and drive to the selected tool holder is thereby achieved from drive shaft 6.
When it is desired to index the turret, with the drive shaft 6 stationary hydraulic pressure is applied to chamber 17 thereby moving the axially movable gear 11, 12 to the left as seen in the Figure whereby gear 12 engages with gear 26.
With faced tooth coupling 3 disengaged, the indexable part 2 of the turret may be rotated under control using encoder feedback, the operation of which is well known. With faced tooth coupling 3 re-engaged, the gear 12 will be in register with one of the internal gears 22 or 25 to enable drive of the selected tool holder to be effected.
Thus, the drive mechanism in accordance with the invention simplifies the construction and operation of the turret and hence provides a cost effective construction.
