A sliding door arrangement in a lift installation comprises a pair of elongated members 22, 23 forming a channel on the lift car co-operable at a langing with blocks 52 on the landing door arrangement so that both sets of doors may be operable by an electric motor 1 on the lift car 2, the members 22, 23 being resiliently mounted so that they may be overridden by the blocks 52 if the latter do not line up with the said channel. The leading edges of the blocks 52 and the members 22, 23 are tapered to facilitate the overriding engagement. The lift car door 9 is driven by the motor 1 through a rotatable arm 3, a resilient telescopic linkage 56 which permits lost motion between the arm 3 and the door 9 if the latter is obstructed, and the members 22, 23. The member 23 is mounted in parallelogram fashion on arms 35 and is movable through linkage 42, 43 operated by the arm 3, to reduce the channel size as the lift car doors begin to open, this causing displacement of pegs 51 on a pivoted plate 45 on the landing door 50, whereby the plate 45 is rotated and unlocked from the door frame 46, to facilitate opening of the landing door with the car door. During the second half of the car door opening and the first half of the car door closing movents, the arm 3 is locked solid with the linkage 5, 6 through a hook 19 and swivel 18 engagement controlled by a cam 21 on the arm 3 and a roller 20 on the hook 18.
