A method of longitudinally sawing wood on a band-sawing machine consists in arranging a straight section of a band-saw blade 3 along the entire length of the wood and moving the saw blade and wood towards each other in a direction perpendicular to the length of the wood to cut the latter. In a machine described for performing the method a log 2 is supported on a base 6 by uprights 11 with hooks 12. A saw band 1 is supported by pulleys 4, 5 mounted on a frame 7 which is movable vertically relative to the base 6 by means of a cylinder 8 and piston 14 arrangement, the piston being secured to the base 6 and the cylinder to frame 7. When pressure fluid is supplied to the piston 14 the saw blade is lowered to cut the log, and after cutting the pressure fluid is exhausted so that the saw blade is raised by the action of compressed gas 16 in the cylinder 8. After each cut the log is repositioned by moving the uprights 11 along guides 10.
