Abstract
1,237,647. Extraction of iron and cobalt from nickeliferous compositions. LE NICKEL. 30 April, 1969 [2 May, 1968], No. 21988/69. Heading C1A. Partially refined nickel matte which is mainly nickel sulphide containing iron and cobalt impurities is refined by mixing with the molten matte, anhydrous nickel chloride, allowing the mixture to settle and removing a layer of floating chlorides and recovering the metal values contained therein. A fused salt solvent, e.g. an alkali metal chloride for the cobalt and iron chlorides, may be added. The tapped chlorides may be water quenched and the metals extracted from resulting solution by (a) oxidation with potassium hypochlorite to form ferric iron followed by precipitation of ferric carbonate by reaction with nickel carbonate, and (b) precipitation of cobalt hydroxide by reaction with nickel hydroxide.
