6837. Holloway, G. T., and Wagner, W. G. March 18. Dry processes of extracting tin. - Ores &c. containing tungsten and tin are smelted in a reverberating furnace with sodium sulphate and carbon in the presence of iron oxide, which may be already contained in the ore or added to the charge. Crude tin and a slag containing sodium tungstate are ultimately withdrawn, and the slag is lixiviated with water for the extraction of the salt. The salt is recovered from the solution by crystallization, and any tin present may be precipitated by means of carbon dioxide, the precipitate being smelted with a succeeding charge and recovered as metal.
