Abstract

1,237,524. Electric correspondence control systems. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Nov. 3, 1969 [Dec. 4, 1968], No. 53750/69. Heading G1N. In an automotive vehicle, the position of the throttle 14, which is connected to the diaphragm 38 of a servo 40 by a chain 42, is determined by the position of a shaped, metallic core member 106, preferably of ferromagnetic material, in a coil 116, the coil forming part of the tank circuit of an oscillator, Fig. 5 (not shown), whose output is thus indicative of the throttle position. The active element of the oscillator is an F. E. T. (156) having a gate electrode connected to one end of coil 116 and a source electrode connected to a centre tap of the coil. The output of the oscillator is rectified and filtered and may be displayed on a meter. The transducer may be used in the control of the vehicle speed as seen in Fig. 6, in which the valves are the vacuum valve 78 and atmospheric valve 80 of the servo, shown in Fig. 1. For a certain throttle angle setting # the transducer provides an output voltage V # which is compared with a voltage E, representing the engine speed error signal, in a differential amplifier (204), Fig.7 (not shown), and depending on whether the engine speed is greater or less than that desired, one or other of the valves 78, 80 is actuated by amplifiers (206), (208) to adjust the position of diaphragm 38 and thus the throttle 14 until balance is obtained.
