Abstract
1,237,084. Drying soap powders. UNILEVER Ltd. 1 Oct., 1968 [2 Oct., 1967], No. 44844/67. Heading C5D. A process for the production of a soap powder comprises spraying an aqueous soap slurry through a gas so as to remove some water from the soap slurry and to form particles of the soap and subsequently removing further water from the soap particles by passing a heated gas through a fluidized bed of the particles. The drying gas passed through the fluidized bed of particles is preferably heated to a temperature of at least 50‹ C., particularly 100-150‹ C. The gas in the first or second drying stages may be air or a mixture of air and a gas obtained by combustion of a flammable material, e.g. oil or coal gas. Both drying stages may be carried out in a single apparatus, but it is preferred that the two drying stages should be carried out in separate apparatus and that a different gas be used for each stage. The term soap is used to denote both pure soap and soap compositions comprising -in addition to soap conventional additives to soap powders such as surface active materials, specifically tallow ethanolamide and alcohol-ethylene oxide adducts; builders such as alkali metal silicates, sodium tripolyphosphate, magnesium sulphate, and the tetrasodium salt of E.D.T.A.; bleaching agents such as sodium perborate; sodium carboxymethylcellulose; sodium toluene sulphonate; and fluorescent agents.
