Abstract

1,237,014. Vapourising apparatus. PYE Ltd. 15 Jan., 1970 [5 Feb., 1969], No. 6171/69. Heading A5T. A vaporiser, for a medical respirator, comprises a first sealed vessel 8A containing liquid 3, a second sealed vessel 8B containing no liquid, and change-over switching means Cl, C2, alternately connecting both vessels in unison to a source N2 of respiratory gas at super-atmospheric pressure and to a patient, the percentage-saturation of the gas passed to the patient from both vessels being determined by the relative quantities of gas-and-vapour and gas contained by the first and second vessels respectively, said quantities also determining the total volume of gas passed to the patient during each inspiratory period. The vessels comprise cylinders, the pistons 10A, 10B of which are linked together for movement in unison, so that the combined volume of the two vessels is constant. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) double-pistons are provided in each cylinder for varying the volumes of the two vessels, additionally, in the same sense, to control the total quantity of gas passed in an inspiratory period, the movements of the four pistons being mechanically interlinked in such a way that the percentage saturation of the gas passed to the patient remains substantially constant when the volume of gas passed during each inspiratory period is changed.
