Abstract

1,236,914. Measuring liquid level electrically. W. H. CONSIDINE. Aug.16, 1968 [May 16, 1967], No.22612/67. Heading G1N. A liquid level measuring system includes a strip 15, having an electrical resistivity higher than that of the liquid, and adhered to the wall of a vessel 11 but insulated therefrom by a layer 12, and means for measuring the resistance between a part of the probe and an electrode in contact with the liquid. Where the cross-sectional dimensions of the vessel vary the dimensions of the resistive material are chosen to vary correspondingly. A temperature compensation element 14 is included insulated from the resistive layer by a second insulating layer 13. Where the vessel wall is electrically conductive it constitutes the electrode. Typically the strip resistivity is one hundred times that of the liquid. Upper and lower level sensing contacts may be provided. In an alternative embodiment the strip comprises a low resistivity material coated with high resistivity material.
