Abstract
1,203,248. Determining size of objects. MUIRHEAD Ltd. Oct.23, 1968 [Oct.12, 1967], No.46648/67. Heading G1N. The size of an externally insulated object e.g. the thickness of insulation of a cable 3, is determined by passing the object in the neighbourhood of a pair of electrodes R1 R1 acting as a resistance immersed in an electrically conductive fluid and measuring the change in conductance between the electrodes. To compensate for temperature and impurity variations in the fluid, further pairs of electrodes R2, R3, R4 acting as resistances are provided and are connected in a bridge circuit, the circuit being energized by a stabilized A.C. generator 4 and the change in conductivity between the electrode pairs R1, R3 respectively being indicated by a detector 5. As shown, the pairs R1, R3 are mounted in an insulator 1 which may be cylindrical or U-shaped and the pairs R2, R4 in an insulator 2, which is cylindrical. The resistance of all electrodes may be varied. The detector may give a visual indication of the required dimension, or may operate an alarm, an auto-size control system, or stop the machinery.
