Abstract

1,200,974. Electric fluid detectors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan.22, 1969 [Jan.23, 1968], No.3481/68. Heading G1N. Non-conducting fluid, e.g. water leaks in a cooling system, is detected by a sensing device including a body of porous insulating material 12, e.g. glass sandwiched between two electrodes 10, 11, and a body 8 e.g. a felt pad, containing a conducting substance, e.g. sodium chloride. The device also includes an apertured plastics housing 3, 4. When non-conducting fluid enters the housing it saturates the felt pad 8 and the resultant boine solution is absorbed by the glass body 12 so that the resistance between the electrodes is decreased. An alarm or control function may then be operated. Several of these sensing devices may be connected on parallel across a D.C. source, and the particular device affected may be indicated by including a colouring substance, e.g. potassium permanganate, in the conducting substance. Further, such devices may be used in bridge networks for detecting changes in the conductivity of a fluid at various depths.
