Abstract

1,236,826. Washing sand. INGENIEURSBUREAU N.V. 23 Aug., 1968 [29 Aug., 1967], No. 40507/68. Heading B1Q. [Also in Division E1] In a method of removing sea water from sand a suspension of sand in sea water is passed through a pipeline 26 into a container 28 where some of the sea water together with some sand is allowed to overflow from the container at 18 for return to the sea whilst the rest of the sea water is at 30f drained out of the sand left in the container for discharge into the sea and the drained sand is conveyed away from the container through a second pipeline 42 in a current of fresh water. Preferably sand dredged out at sea is brought by hoppers to the vicinity of an embankment for dumping at the intake of the first pipeline. The container may be divided into compartments, which are filled and emptied in turn. The container may be located on land or on a barge on an inland waterway, where it may be anchored and the container connected to the second pipeline or where, when the container is full of sand, may voyage on the waterway to the place where the pipeline is located, the sand being then drained of sea water before the voyage commences or during the voyage, in which case the sea water is drained into a tank on the vessel. Freshwater can be sprayed onto the sand before it enters the second pipeline.
