Abstract

1,236,514. 514. De-gassing molten metal. PENNSALT CHEMICALS CORP. March 31, 1969 [April 5, 1968], No. 16743/69. Heading C7D. [Also in Division B3] Apparatus for de-gassing and casting metal comprises first and second vacuum chambers A and C, the first chamber having a furnace B therein and the second chamber having moulds D therein, and a ladle E which is able to receive molten metal from the furnace B and to move into and through the second chamber C to permit tapping of the molten metal from the ladle E into the moulds. Between the two chambers is a valve F which consists of a sliding door suspended from a trolley 142 running along a rail (148). When closed, the valve isolates the first and second chambers from each other, when open it allows a wagon 100 carrying the ladle 108 to move along rails 56, 106, and 60 into the second chamber C. In operation, the valve door F is closed, the chamber A evacuated and a hot or cold charge of metal supplied to the furnace B from a hopper 18. A mould car D is then moved into the second chamber C, the entrance G closed by a sliding door 170 and the chamber C evacuated valve door F is opened, molten metal poured into the ladle 108 from the furnace by tilting the latter, the ladle wagon wheeled into the chamber C and the metal poured into the moulds. The ladle is rotatable to enable it to supply two parallel lines of moulds. After closing the door F the furnace may be recharged or the chamber A brought up to atmospheric pressure without interfering with the casting operation in chamber C.
