1,236,324. Impregnating wood. DR. WOLMAN G.m.b.H. 7 Oct., 1969 [9 Oct., 1968], No. 49269/69. Heading D1P. Wet wood is impregnated with, e.g. bituminous coal tar oil, in a vessel under pressure, following which a pressure at least equal to this pressure is maintained in the vessel while the excess oil is forced out of the vessel. The vessel is then closed and evacuated below atmospheric pressure to evaporate any water in the wood, the water and any oil which come out of the wood being removed from the vessel, preferably while still under vacuum. The oil may be drawn into the vessel under a vacuum, and impregnation may be at, e.g. 90-110‹C. The pressure may be 8-10 atm and the vacuum 1.1 x 10-<SP>2</SP> Torr. The wood may contain moisture above the fibre saturation point; in Examples a value of 60-90% is quoted.
