Abstract

1,235,942. Coating by vapour deposition. GLAVERBEL. June 26, 1968 [Sept. 18, 1967], No.30531/68. Heading C7F. Material is vapourized in vacuo by electron bombardment and vapour travelling from the place where it is thus formed is deflected on to a substrate by an electrode of the electrode system used to generate the electron stream. In Fig. 1, crucible 10 is electrically conducting and acts as anode and contains coating material 11, whilst cathode 12, consisting of a W plate 12a coated with thoria 12b coacts with the anode to generate the electron stream which causes evaporation and acts to deflect vapour of 11 horizontally as shown at 13 and 14, toward, for instance, two vertical glass sheets placed either side of the assembly, which may be moved vertically with respect to said sheets. Other apparatuses are described; glass and plastics may be coated, coating materials mentioned being Al, Sb 2 S 3 , CdS, CaF 2 , CeO 2 Cr 2 O 3 , PbCl 2 , LiF, MgF 2 , AgCl, NaF, WO 3 , V 3 O 8 and ZnS.
