An electro-erosion machine for eroding variable-section grooves in metal has its electrode 8 mounted for vertical and horizontal movement on carriages 7, 4 driven by independent drives 12, 13 connected electrically with a control device 16 to adjust the erosion gap. The electrode holder 28 is mounted on the carriage 7 which has a pair of arms 17, 18 to which bands 19, 20 are secured and pass around a turntable supporting a workpiece 24. The workpiece, e.g. a mill roll or a roll forging die, to be grooved with varying cross-section is mounted on the turntable so as to be rotatable about a pivot 25. An adjustable stop 9 is provided to limit the machining depth. The carriage 4 may be moved against the stop 9 and the vertical carriage 7 reciprocated in one or more passes to firstly roughly machine the groove and then finishing the groove. Alternatively, the carriage 7 is fixed and the carriage 4 reciprocated radially of the workpiece. After each cycle the carriage, and hence the workpiece, is slightly moved. Alternatively both carriages are moved simultaneously to keep the gap constant.
