Abstract
1,235,693. Sealed accumulators. ELECTROMITE CORP. 22 May, 1968 [22 May, 1967], No. 24526/68. Heading H1B. A sealed secondary cell comprises a container 11, containing electrodes, an inner cover 21, within the container and enclosing the electrodes and an outer cover 35, attached to the side wall of the container, closing it and defining with the inner cover a closed chamber, the inner cover having apertures through which the electrode contacts extend. The apertures are sealed by rings 24. A pressure relief valve 26 incorporates a spring-loaded ball valve 29 and a rubber sleeve valve 34. Gas escaping through the valve is deflected downwards by baffle 42 and then passes through absorbent pads 36-38 containing alkaline salt to remove acid, acidified Na 2 S to remove Pb, Bi, Cu, As, and Sn, alkaline Na 2 S to remove Ni, Co and iron and silica gel to remove water before finally escaping through vent 43. There may be a guide hole (46, Fig. 3, not shown) in the outer cover through which a syringe may be passed to pierce a plug (45) in the inner cover and inject electrolyte into the cell. The plug reseals when the needle is withdrawn. The cell may be an Ag/KOH/ZnO, Ag/KOH/CdO, NiOOH (on sintered nickel)/Cd(OH) 2 (on sintered nickel) or lead/acid cell. Each electrode may be enveloped in a separator comprising two sheets of microporous nylon or polythene sealed around the edge to form a peripheral flange. The positive envelope may include SiO 2 to thicken the electrolyte. The envelopes may have ribs and/or grooves which interlock. The electrode/separator assemblies may be surrounded by a pad of fibrous polythene. In a lead/acid cell the electrolyte may have a specific gravity between 1À210 and 1-300.
