Abstract

1,235,086. Petroleum coke. CONTINENTAL OIL CO. 10 Feb., 1970 [10 Feb., 1969], No. 6379/70. Heading C5E. Coke having a low sulphur content is made from a sulphur-containing petroleum feedstook by mixing the feedstock with an alkali metal carbonate, coking the mixture, and treating the coke with hydrogen at elevated temperature, e.g. in the range 1000‹ to 1600‹ F. The term carbonate includes bicarbonates, sesquicarbonates, and hydrated carbonates. In an illustrated embodiment, the mixture is coked in a delayed coker and the coke ground for the treatment with hydrogen in a fluidized bed. Sodium carbonate is added to the feedstock in amounts ranging from 0À3 to 5% b.w. of the coke obtained from the fluidized bed.
