Abstract

1,234,675. Mining machine-cutter heads. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. 27 Feb., 1970 [4 March, 1969], No. 11447/69. Heading E1F. A source 16 of electro-magnetic radiators and a detector 18 of such radiations are so mounted on a cutter head of a mineral-mining machine that the detector will measure back scatter radiation from the rock in which the machine is working and control, in accordance with this measured radiation, the magnitude of a signal emitted from a signal generator associated with the detector. The emitted signal is preferably utilised in the manual or automatic steering of the machine to maintain the head cutting at a desired position in a mineral seam relative to the roof and/or floor thereof. Preferably the source and the detector are peripherally mounted on a cutter drum either axially close together at the outer end of the drum or at either end of the drum dependent on information being required respectively of the vertical position or tilt of the drum. The source and detector are each embedded in an elastomeric material 18, 20 in a holder 14, 16 secured to the drum. A protective window of a tough material having a low atomic weight is positiond over the detector. Signals from the detector can be passed through a commutator associated with the drum. Such a construction allows of gating the signals to allow of either the passage of a signal when the detector is adjacent either the roof or the floor of a seam, or an average of such signals over a number of revolutions of the cutter head.
