Abstract
1,234,568. Controlling reactors. BRITISH NUCLEAR DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION Ltd. 1 July, 1968 [3 July, 1967], No. 30490/67. Heading G6C. In a gas-cooled nuclear reactor the standpipes associated with the control rods have a narrow diameter to increase the thickness of pressure vessel wall material between the stand pipes. The control rod 13 is moved vertically within the channel 6, in core 1, by the chain 8 and winding drum 9. The narrow standpipe 7, in top cap 4, accommodates the chain and the lower standpipe 12 extends through the bottom cap 5 to permit the rod 13 to pass into the recovery machine 14. Standpipe 12 is normally closed by the plug 16 which carries the shock absorber 17.
