Abstract
1,234,214. Cleaning underwater surfaces. P. D. R. T. WILLCOX. 6 Feb., 1969 [6 Nov., 1967; 1 March, 1968], Nos. 50294/67 and 10089/68. Heading B7M. [Also in Divisions A4 and C7] In a method of removing marine growth from a ship's hull whilst afloat which comprises lowering into the water from the ship a flexible porous pad 1 having a liquid permeable dispensing face, and a liquid-tight parallel other face 2, water is evacuated from the pad through outlet pipe 6 to draw the dispensing face into close contact with the hull. Steam or a poisonous liquid, which passes through the dispensing face to attack the adjacent marine growth, is fed to the interior of the pad through inlet pipe 5. In the embodiment shown two systems of parallel tubes 4 are embedded in and communicate with the porous pad, one system being coupled to the inlet pipe 5 and the other to the outlet pipe 6. Elongated float 8 and sinker 9 give the pad neutral buoyancy.
