Abstract

The feed soln. is fed into a vessel contg. a membrane and at the same time spent soln. is displaced from the other side of the membrane. When the vessel is full, valves are changed over to pump the fresh soln. to the membrane unit. The soln. is pumped at high pressure through the unit and the spent liquor returns to the same vessel but the other side of the membrane. When it has been completely pumped round, the vessels are changed over again to displace the spent liq. In this way the energy consumption is much reduced. Used for obtaining potable and service water from brackish and sea water. Reduces the energy requirements.
