Abstract

Lubricating oil is obtained from a two-stage hydrocracking in which (i) a hydrocarbon oil boiling in the range 800-1200‹ F., and containing less than 5% by wt. asphaltenes is at least 20% converted in a first hydrocracking zone at 700-850‹ F. to form materials boiling below the initial boiling point of the feed, and a hydrocarbon wax boiling in the range 750-1100‹ F., which is separated, and (ii) at least a portion of said wax is hydrocracked in a second zone at 650-830‹ F. together with a second hydrocarbon oil boiling in the range 700-1100‹ F., containing less than 5% by wt. asphaltenes and having an average boiling point no higher than that of the first oil feed, to convert at least 20% of said wax and oil feed to materials boiling below the feed boiling range, and at least one light neutral oil of viscosity index above 110 is recovered from the second zone effluent. The catalyst in each zone comprises Group VI and Group VIII metal components in association with a refractory oxide, specifically oxides or sulphides of Mo or W with those of the iron group, noble metals, Co, Ni, Pt or Pd, and cogels or coprecipitates of SiO 2 with Al 2 O 3 , MgO, ZrO 2 , TiO 2 or B 2 O 3 . The first oil teed may, be a straight-run gas oil or a deasphalted oil, optionally desulphurized or denitrified, and the second oil feed may also be a straight-run gas oil. The effluent from either or both zones may be U.V.-stabilized by solvent extraction with phenol or furfural.
