Abstract

1,234,092. Treating textiles. UNILEVER Ltd. 24 July, 1968 [24 July, 1967], No. 35305/ 68. Heading D1P. Textile fibres are brightened and softened by salting out on the fibres a complex of an anionic fluorescent brightening agent and a fabric softening cationic nitrogenous compound by contacting them with an aqueous solution of a composition comprising 0.01- 0.7% by weight of an anionic fluorescent brightening agent, 2-20% by weight of a fabric softening cationic nitrogenous compound capable of forming a complex with the brightening agent and 8-89% by weight of a dissociable salt capable of having a salting out effect upon the complex. The composition may also contain up to 15% by weight of an anionic dispersant having a dissociation constant lower than that of the complex. The anionic fluorescent brightening agent may be disodium 4, 4'-bis (2-diethanolamino-4-anilinos-triazine-6-ylamino) stilbene 2:2<SP>1</SP>-disulphonate, disodium 4, 4'-bis(2-morpholino-4-anilinos-triazin-6-ylamino stilbene -2:2<SP>1</SP>-disulphonate, disodium 4, 4'-bis(2, 4-dianilino-s-triazin-6-yl amino) stilbene-2, 2<SP>1</SP>-disulphonate, disodium 4, 4<SP>1</SP>-bis [2-anilino-4 -(N-methyl-N-2-hydroxyethylamino)-s-triazin-6-ylamino] stilbene-2, 2'- disulphonate, disodium 4, 4<SP>1</SP>-bis(4-phenyl-2, 1, 3-triazol-2-yl)-stilbene-2, 2'-disulphonate, disodium 4, 4<SP>1</SP>-bis [2-anilino-4-(1-methyl-2-hydroxyethyl-amino)-S-triazin-6-ylamino] stilbene -2, 2'-disulphonate and sodium 2-(stilbyl-4<SP>11</SP>)- (naphtho-1<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>1</SP>:4, 5)-1, 2, 3-triazole-2<SP>11</SP>-sulphonate. Suitable softening agents are dimethyl dicoco ammonium chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, methyl sulphate and acetate, dimethyl distearyl ammonium chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, methyl sulphate and acetate, dimethyl dihydrogenated tallow ammonium chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, methyl sulphate and acetate, dimethyl N-alkyl (C 12-16 ) benzyl ammonium chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, methyl sulphate and acetate, N- methyl-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-N-(2- hydroxydodecyl)-N-benzyl ammonium chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, methyl sulphate and acetate and N, N-dimethyl-N-dodecyl N-(2-hydroxyethyl) ammonium bromide, chloride, iodide, sulphate, methyl sulphate and acetate, reaction products of higher fatty-acids with hydroxyalkyl alkylene diamines, C 16-20 amide imidazoline salts, alkylamido alkylene pyridinium chlorides, 1-(2alkylamido ethyl)-2-alkyl imidazoline salts and salts of heptadecyl imidazoline. The dissociable salt may be a sodium, ammonium, potassium, calcium or magnesium chloride, tripolyphosphates, sulphate, pyrophosphate, carbonate, silicate, citrate, acetate, formate, propionate, tartrate or malonate, and the anionic dispersant which may be encapsulated with a slowly water-soluble film forming material may be sodium toluene sulphonate or phosphonate, sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate or phosphate, sodium pentadecyl benzene sulphonate or phosphonate, sodium benzene sulphonate or phosphonate, sodium xylene sulphonate or phosphonate or a sodium soap of a fatty acid having 6-10 carbon atoms. Aqueous compositions used to treat textile fibres may contain 0.25-10 ppm of anionic fluorescent brightening agent, 0.005- 0.05% by weight of softening agent, 0.02- 0.5% by weight of dissociable salt and an anionic dispersant in an amount up to equimolar with the softening agent. Textile materials comprising polyester, polyacrylonitrile, copolyacrylonitrile-vinyl chloride, cellulose triacetate or acetate, polyamide, wool, silk or cotton may be treated.
