Description

,Patented Aug. 23, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ROBERT GEORGE FABGHER, LESLIE DOUGLAS GALLOWAY, AN D MAURICE ERNEST PRO- BEET, OF MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOBS TO THE BRITISH COTTON INDUSTRY RESEARCH: ASSOCIATION, OF .DIDSBURY, ENGLAND, A BRITISH ASSOCIATION PBOOFING OB LIKE TREATMENT OF MATERIALS TO PROTECT THEM FROM KILDEW. AND OTHER FUNGOID GROWTHS Ho Drawing. Application filed October 18, 1929, Serial No. 400,727, and in Great Britain October 18, 1928.
This invention relates to a treatment by which goods of all descriptions, but especially textile materials, may be protected from the attack of mildew and other fungoid rowths or may be given increased power resist ance to such attack.
Accordin to our invention the goods, which mayie yarns or fabrics composed of textile material or may be paper, leather, rubber, timber adhesives, etc., are treated with w an arylamide of a salicylic acid, preferably in the form of its alkali salt. In particular we find-that salicylic anilide and alkoxyanilide are very effective agents for this purpose. 1g Arylamides of substituted salicylic acids, and
arylamidesther than the anilide or o-anisidide are also found to be suitable though to a smaller degreegamongst these may be mentioned 5-chlorosalicylanilide', 'fl-resorcylic anas ilide, salic lic o-toluidide, and many others.
The ary amide may be applied to the goods in any convenient manner, and to the finished goods or at any convenient stage in their manufacture. For example the goods to be treat- 85 ed ma be sprayed or painted with or immerse in a solution of the alkali salt of the salicylic arylamide; or the latter may be added during the sizing, mordanding, dyeing, finishing or other operative treatment of so the goods, or may be incorporated into the mass, solution etc. constituting one stage in the manufacture of the goods.
For the proofing of cotton or other yarns or fabrics against mildew etc. we may, according to one form of our invention, introduce into the sizing bath a solution of the arylamide in aqueous caustic soda, or an aqueous solution of the sodium salt of the arylamide. E i -ore usuall the antiseptic will be applied in form 0 a suspension or partial solution in water. In all cases the amount of arylamide taken up by the goods may be from 0.01 to 0.1 per cent. of the weight of the goods; larger or smaller proportions ma be applied, if desired, without departing om our invention.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A sizing bath for cotton yarns and fabrics comprising in aqueous solution an alkali salt of an arylamide of a salicylic acid selected from a class consisting of a salicylic anilide, salicylic alkoxyanilide, 5-chlorosalicylanilide, B-resorcylic anilide and salicylic o-toluidide.
2. A sizing bath for cotton yarns and fabrics comprising in aqueous solution an alkali salt of an arylamide of a salicylic acid selected from a class consisting of salicylic anilide and alkoxyanilide.
3. A sizing bath for cotton yarns and fab IlCS comprising the sodium salt of salicylanilide in aqueous solution.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a material usually subject to the attack of fungus impregnated with a mildew-proofing concentration of an alkali salt of an arylamide of a salicylic acid selected from a class consisting of salicylic anilide, salicylic alkoxyanilide, fi-chlorosalicylanilide, B-resorcylic anilide and salicylic o toluidide.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a material usually subject to the attack of 'fungus impregnated with a mildew-proofing concentration of an arylamide of a salicylic acid selected from a class consisting of salicylic anilide and alkoxyanilide.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a material usually subject to the attack of fungus impregnated with a mildew-proofing concen- 80 tration of an arylamide of a salicylic acid selected from a class consisting of salicylic anilide, salicylic alkoxyanilide, 5-chlorosalicylanilide, ,B-resorcylic anilide and salicylic o-toluidide.
7. As a new article of manufacture, a material usually subject to the attack of fungus impregnated with a mildew-proofing concentration of salicylanilide.
8. As a new article of manufacture, a material usually subject to the attack of fungus impregnated with from 0.01 to 0.1 per cent by weight of said material of an arylamide of a salicylic acid selected from a class con- 95 sisting of salicylic anilide, salicylic alkoxyanilide, 5-chloro-salicylanilide, ,B-resorcylic anilide and salicylic o-toluidide.
9'. As a new article of manufacture, a material usually subject to the attack of fungus impregnated with from 0.01 to 0.1 per cent by welght of said material of salicylanilide.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures.
