[Class 140] Textile materials comprising naturally occurring fibres of cellulosic origin, particularly those used for the manufacture of bags for fertilizers, are proofed against acidic fumes by incorporating therein approximately 3 per cent, or more, of a metallic alkaline salt of benzoic acid highly soluble in water, defined as benzoate of sodium, potassium, ammonium, calcium or magnesium. Bast-fibre twine may similarly be proofed by incorporating therein approximately 5 per cent, or more, of such a salt. The materials treated include jute, flax, hemp and cotton. Woven fabrics, or yarns, either single or ply, drawn in the form of a sheet from a beam, may be passed through an aqueous solution of the salt, excess being removed by passage between rollers, and dried ; or yarns or twines may be immersed in the solution, centrifuged to remove excess, and dried in the form of hanks. Or, a mass of jute fibres may be sprayed with a solution of the salt ; this may be done at the same stage as the fibres are sprayed with mineral oil and water or an emulsion thereof, the resultant product being subsequently spun as in the normal process. According to the Provisional Specification, the proofing agent may be the sodium or other salts of benzoic acid or its homologues, e.g. sodium toluate.
