1,233,947. Feeding webs. SCHNELLPRESSENFABRIK KOENIG & BAUER A.G. 25 Nov., 1968 [7 Feb., 1968], No. 55892/68. Heading B8R. The tension in a web 6 being fed to a printing press is controlled by adjusting the speed of a belt 3 driving the supply reel which is mounted on a stand 1, this adjustment being effected so that the web is fed in register with the press; signals representative of registration errors are applied to a setting device, e.g. a pneumatic cylinder 8, linked to a dancing roller 7 the movement of which controls the speed of the belt drive 3. When the supply reel is almost exhausted, a spare reel 2 is moved into operative engagement with the belt drive 3 and the tension in the expiring web is then controlled by adjustment of an induction brake 5 acting on the expiring reel 4. The control means for the brake 5 includes a regulating resistor 10 linked to a spring 15 and a second pneumatic cylinder assembly 12 which also receives the registration-error signals. The arrangement is such that the position of the roller 7, and thus the speed of the belt drive 3, does not alter during reel change, whereby the circumferential speed of the spare reel is synchronized with the speed of the expiring web so that the joining of the new web to the old can be effected by conventional pasting and severing means.
