Abstract
123,353. Hecht, J. S., and Dowdell, A. T. Jan. 2, 1918. Piston packing.-Consists in a conical ring of the obturator type without an inwardly-directed flange, held in a groove in the piston, as shown at A, Fig. 10. It may be divided and the joint covered by a tongue-piece, or one end may be bent to fit over the other. It may be slit to give elasticity, as described in Specification 123,351, and may be formed from a strip with the grain running in any desired direction, as described in Specifications 8571/15 and 123,328, [Class 83 (ii), Metal articles &c.]. The upper edge of the ring may be grooved to allow the pressure-fluid to pass to the space behind it, or the piston may have grooves or holes for a similar purpose. The ring A<x> may be corrugated, fluted, &c., as shown in Fig. 18, for instance, and it may have an outwardly-directed lip as described in Specification 123,331, or the edges may be bevelled to give any desired surface of contact with the cylinder and groove. The groove in the piston may be made of the form shown in Fig. 16 to accommodate a comparatively deep ring A. Two or more rings may be carried in one groove either in contact or separated by a keeper-ring, as shown in Fig. 17 with respect to two rings.
