Abstract

Piston packing. - The inner flange of a thin flexible metal packing of cup-leather type e is pressed against the side of the piston groove by spring pressure. A helical spring may be employed made either from wire or from a flat metal strip. The ring is caused to exert axial pressure, either by twisting it, or by distorting it to the section shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 5 shows a modified form of spring 1 acting on the flange of a packing-ring 6. The ring may be of rectangular or oval section. A wave spring made from a flat metal strip may be employed acting either directly on the flange of the packing-ring or on a keeper ring. Fig. 12 shows a wire wave spring 8 lying in a recess in a keeper ring 5 which is pressed on to the flange of the packing-ring 6. Alternatively, the keeper ring may have pockets containing spiral springs, or spiral springs 12 may be confined between two rings 5<a>, 5<b>, as shown in Fig. 16.
