Abstract

1,232,973. Fuel injection pumps; fuel injectors. BRITISH INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE RESEARCH INSTITUTE Ltd. May 28, 1968 [June 5, 1967], No.25879/67. Headings F1A and F1B. A fuel injection pump piston 5 is connected to a piston 4 which is hydraulically actuated. The cylinders 6, 3 are formed in a cylindrical housing 1 which is rotated (as shown) in a casting 2 to act as a rotary valve or is surrounded by a rotary sleeve valve. The housing 1 has ports 8 which register in turn with a port 7 connected to a supply to actuating liquid which may include an accumulator and may be the feed pump (as shown) or a separate supply. Ports 9a, 10 and valve 11 control the fuel supply to the cylinder 6, the supply pressure also causing the return stroke of the pistons 5, 4. A port 12 distributes to outlets 13. The piston 5 has grooves 14, 16 and a passage 15 so that following closure of the port 12 by piston 5 the port is opened to a spill passage 19 connected through a controlled lift valve 21 to a throttle outlet passage 20. The return stroke of the piston 4 and hence the quantity of fuel delivered is regulated by a spring-loaded throttle valve 23, Fig.2, in a discharge port 22 to which the ports 8 open. Operation is controlled by a lever connected to a spindle having a segment 26 engaging the end of the valve 23 which may be forced against the idling stop 29 or completely closed. In a function embodiment Figs.6, 7 (not shown) a spaced control valve and a torque control valve automatically control the port 22 in response to pressure in the passage 20 which varies in accordance with speed. These valves may instead control the flow from the inlet 9 to the pump cylinder. Pressure liquid from the cylinder 6, after the outlet 12 is closed, is fed via passage 63 to a groove 54 which is opened to a port 51 which communicates in turn with pipes 49 leading to the injectors above the valves so that the pressure closes the valve. Subsequently the pipes 49 are relieved to the passage 20 through a valve 59. Two suitable injectors are described Figs.4, 5 (not shown). The timing of injection is controlled by a helical slot drive coupling controlled by a piston 67 having a relief groove 80 and subjected to the pressure in the passage 20. Leakage is discharged by the piston 4 through a valve 58.
