Ethylbenzene is separated from a mixture with xylene isomers by extracting the xylenes with HF 3 -BF 3 in the presence of a saturated aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon having at least one tertiary carbon atom as diluent, the ethylbenzene remaining in the raffinate phase. Preferred diluents are isohexane, isopentane, methyl cyclohexane and methyl cyclopentane. The extraction may be carried out at - 50‹ to + 20‹ C. and 1-20 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>.
