Abstract
A process for the purification of p,p1-dihydroxydiphenyl dimethylmethane comprises contacting a crude p,p1-dihydroxydiphenyl-dimethylmethane with m- or p-cresol or a mixture thereof to form an addition product between the p,p1-dihydroxydiphenyl-dimethylmethane and the m- or p-cresol or mixture thereof, separating the addition product formed and recovering purified p,p1-dihydroxydiphenyl-dimethylmethane from the addition product by distillation in vacuo. The formation of the addition product may be effected in the presence of a solvent, e.g. a hydrocarbon or halogenated derivative of a hydrocarbon, e.g. carbon tetrachloride.
