A universal motor 1 connected to an A.C. supply may have a rectifier 3 switched into its supply circuit by means of which one half wave of the A.C. feed is blocked, the motor torque frequency is halved and consequently the speed of the motor is reduced. The switching is by changeover switch 4 or alternatively by an onoff switch (not shown) for by-passing the rectifier. Rectifier 3 is a diode. The speed is also controlled by variable resistor 2 or by a transformer (not shown). Motor 1 is primarily for use in a domestic sewing machine and the diode 3 and switch 4 may be installed on the motor, in the starter housing or in the lead between the mains and the motor. The arrangement is intended to vary the speed while maintaining the torque peaks the same for maintaining the penetration power of the needle in the sewing machine.
