Abstract
1387872 Control of commutator motors GJC (DEVELOPMENT) Ltd 10 Feb 1972 6353/72 Heading H2J A series wound commutator motor 1 has its field winding arranged in two parts 2, 3, the former being shunted by an adjustable resistor 6 which provides speed control whilst the motor is energized from an A.C. source 4 via a rectifier 5, full speed being obtained by operation of ganged switches 10a-10d to connect the armature 1 and winding part 3 directly to the source 4. The resistor 6 may be replaced by a tapped resistor adjustable by a manual selector switch, Fig. 2 (not shown), or by a potentiometer, Fig. 3 (not shown) or by a thyristor whose firing angle is adjusted by a variable resistor in a control circuit connected across the source 4, Fig. 4 (not shown), the rectifier in this case being a single diode. The thyristor may be prevented from conducting during operation of the ganged switches to produce full speed. Winding part 2 has approximately twice as many turns as part 3.
