Abstract

1,231,204. Templates. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. 21 Aug., 1968 [22 Aug., 1967], No. 38578/67. Heading B4X. [Also in Division B3] In a method of securing a workpiece 28 to a base-plate 12 a template 1 is placed in a predetermined positional relationship, e.g. in a holder for raising and lowering the template, and supports 14-18 are placed on the baseplate through cut-outs 3-7 which define a desired position and orientation of the supports. The supports 14-18 are secured to the baseplate and the template is raised to allow the workpiece 28 to be placed on the supports whereupon the template 1 is lowered and holes 2 in the template are used to position the workpiece on the supports. The workpiece 28 is then secured to the supports and the template 1 removed. The holes 2 allow distinctive features of the workpiece, e.g. the corners, to be sighted and the diameter of the holes gives the required tolerance for positioning the workpiece. The template 1 includse magnetic and non-magnetic plugs 9 to provide a binary code identification means, a hole 8 to engage a datum 13 on the base-plate and a chamfered corner 10 to assist in orienting the template. Operating instructions are provided on the template, e.g. in a first operation in which slots are machined a workpiece is clamped at supports 17, 18 in a second operation the workpiece is clamped at support 16. The supports 14-18 are secured to the base-plate by screws that engage with a square grid pattern of holes. Each support 14, 15 has raised support surfaces 19, 20 against which the workpiece is clamped by spring urged screws which screw up into tapped holes in the workpiece, Each support 16, 17, 18 has raised support surfaces, e.g. 21, against which the workpiece is clamped by a top clamp, e.g. 32, 34, having clamping surfaces aligned with the support surfaces and by means of a bolt 33, 36. A packing plate may be used, e.g. at support 17, when the workpiece 28 only partly overlies the support.
