Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A conveyer drive shaft for a mine face conveyer comprises a stepped shaft 20 with chain drive sprockets 22 fast with the smaller diameter portion 23 and a plurality of splines 28 on the periphery of the larger diameter portion 26 for connection with similar splines on an adaptor 30 coupled to a driven shaft 34. To relieve the splines of bending and side loads, the adaptor 30 and the larger diameter portion 26 contact each other at A and B. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) the splines are replaced by a series of rollers (40) received in stepped apertures (42) in the portion (26). The rollers have hardened steel bushes (44) the outer faces of which are spherical having a centre of curvature on the axis of the shaft (20). The bushes (44) contact bushes (50) in recesses (48) in the adaptor (30). In a further embodiment the splines are replaced by gear teeth.
