The machine of the parent specification for applying molten thermoplastic material to a shoe upper component and comprising a work support having a portion of outline shape corresponding to the portion of the component to be coated, means co-operating with the work support for clamping a component therebetween with said portion of the component exposed, an applicator device, and means whereby relative movement between the work support and the applicator device can take place in such a manner that molten material is spread over said exposed portion, is modified by providing a member adapted to apply pressure to said spread material before the component is removed from the work support. A component is clamped between a resilient pad 102, fixed to a carriage 22, and a movable plate 120. Carriage 22 is then shifted first leftwards to bring the exposed surface of the component into engagement with a driven applicator roller journalled in a casing 19, and then rightwards to its original position. A chilled block 728 then descends to apply pressure to the coating spread on the component. Block 728 is covered on top and sides by insulation 732, and is formed with interconnected transverse bores 739, 741 connected by pipes 744 to a source of refrigerant. Block 728 is pivoted about a horizontal pin 726 to the lower end of the piston rod 729 of a double-acting air cylinder 714. A plate 718, rigid with piston rod 729, carries an upstanding rod 720 slidable in a fixed bracket 710 to prevent rotation of piston rod 729. A spring 734, interposed between plate 718 and block 728 at one side of pin 726, biases block 728 against a screwed stud 738, adjustably carried by plate 718 at the other side of pin 726, for ensuring parallel engagement between the undersurface 730 of block 728 and the coated component.
