Abstract

1,230,859. Apparatus for fusing toner. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Dec.23, 1968 [Dec. 27, 1967], No.60974/68. Heading G2H. An apparatus for fusing electroscopic toner on an image carrier 10 comprises a rotatable drum 11 having a glass or quartz sleeve 13 of high thermal radiation transmitting qualities, a radiant heater 40 within the drum and a reflector 44 for focusing radiant heat on to the carrier ahead of the nip formed between the drum 11 and a pressure roller 12. The sleeve 13 has a coating 50 of set-off preventing material, e.g. silicone varnish or fluorocarbon monomer. A wick 52 applies set off preventing liquid, e.g., silicone oil, vegetable oil, or a glyceride to the drum 11. The roller 12 is actuated towards the drum 11 by a solenoid 33 against a spring 34, under the control of a switch. An auxiliary heating element 46 and reflector 48 cause preheating of the carrier 10 ahead of the nip.
