A detergent laundry bar, substantially free of pre-formed sodium bicarbonate, and having a smooth feel in use and a specific gravity below 1À4, comprises 50-75% by weight of a binder comprising a mixture of starch and/or cereal flour and an organic sulphoxy-containing detergent, the weight of detergent in the bar being in the range 20-40% and the weight of starch and/or cereal flour being at least 22%; at least 10% by weight of an alkaline builder salt, the amount of builder salt being less than the amount of detergent, the alkaline builder salt comprising a salt which has been hydrated in situ in the presence of the binder, which hydrated salt is sodium carbonate, pentasodium tripolyphosphate or a mixture thereof, the weight of sodium carbonate, pentasodium tripolyphosphate or mixture thereof being at least 15% of the weight of the sulphoxy-containing detergent, and 12- 28% by weight of moisture. The aforesaid proportions of ingredients, other than moisture, are each calculated on the basis of the non- aqueous content of the ingredient. Suitable sulphoxy-containing detergents include alkyl benzene sulphonates, alkenyl sulphonates, hydroxyalkane sulphonates, paraffin sulphonates, salts of alkyl esters of α-sulpho fatty acids and alkyl sulphates. The alkaline builder salt may also contain sodium bicarbonate formed by the neutralization of sodium carbonate in situ. The starch used is preferably corn starch but other starches such as yucca starch, potato or tapioca starch may be used, whilst the cereal flour may be wheat flour. The starch is preferably in ungelatinized form. The bar may also contain sodium silicate, sodium sulphate, CMC and PVA. The detergent laundry bar is produced by plodding a mixture of the various ingredients into a rod and then cutting into bars.
