Abstract
1,230,145. Yellowing prevention. I. W. S. NOMINEE CO. Ltd. 1 Oct., 1969 [8 July, 1968], No. 32540/68. Heading DIP. Protein fibres are prevented from yellowing, for example by sunlight, by applying an acidic solution of a reducing agent of the general formula: where R # H, a 1 to 4 C alkyl radical; X # H, a 1 to 4 C alkyl radical, or an alkanoyl substituted amino group; n=0, 1 or 2; or a salt of the above reducing agent, and subsequently drying the fibres so that a substantial amount of the reducing agent remains unreacted on the fibres. An amount of reducing agent, as a solution of pH between 2 and 6, is applied to the fibres, which may have been pretreated with a bleaching agent and/or a fluorescent brightening agent, so that between 1 and 10% by weight of reducing agent remains on the fibres. Preferable compounds of the above formula are thioglycollic acid, 2, and 3-mercaptopropionic acid, 4-mercaptobutyric acid, N-acetylcysteine, 5-ethylthioglycollic acid, N-acetylmethionine, and salts thereof. Protein fibres which may be treated include silk and wool.
