Sealing means for a piston or piston-rod 1 comprises two sets of sealing units H1-H3 and N1-N3 on the high pressure and low pressure sides of the seal respectively, each unit comprising a sealing ring 6, 8, or 9 and a split supporting ring 5 or 7 surrounding the rod without radial clearance, each sealing ring 9 of the low pressure sealing units N1-N3 being of soft packing material, e.g. plastics material. The supporting rings 5 and 7 are fractured at one place B, Fig. 2, which may be in the region of a radial bore D1, and have a bore D slightly less than the rod diameter d. The sealing rings 6 and 8 are inwardly acting piston rings and the sealing rings 9 are urged inwardly by spring rings 10.
