Abstract

1,230,014. Waste compacting device. COMPACTOR CORP. 18 April, 1968 [9 Aug., 1967], No. 18346/68. Heading B8C. Apparatus for compacting waste has two rams reciprocal in a housing containing the waste, the two rams being arranged to reciprocate together until the back pressure generated by the waste exceeds a predetermined value when one ram is activated to reduce the back pressure and allow further joint reciprocation. A housing 10 contains a primary ram 18 reciprocated by two fluid motors 40 and a secondary ram 19 slidable axially within the main ram by a fluid motor 42 secured to the primary ram skirt. When waste is detected in a shoot 12 by a sonic or light beam and switch arrangement 70 fluid is pumped to the motors 40 to reciprocate the rams 18, 19 together and compact the waste material into the narrowed portion 24 of the housing. When the back pressure reaches a predetermined level sensed by a sequence valve (100, Fig. 10) fluid is also pumped to the motor 42 to activate the ram 19. Advancement and withdrawal of this ram forms an aperture in the wall of compressed material and so reduces the pressure of the material. The two rams then continue reciprocating together. Limit switches 66, 67, 68 control the movement of the rams which can be cylindrical or non-cylindrical according to the shape of the housing. Deodorizers and insecticides can be sprayed from an inlet 74. A waste receiving can 14 can be placed at the end 80 of the housing, the latter having an interlock switch 112 so that operation of the apparatus is prevented when there is no can in place. Sawteeth to slice the compacted waste are provided on a head wall 26 of the ram 18. In an alternative embodiment the secondary ram 124, Fig. 8, is connected to a screw drive 120 and is encircled by a compression spring 122 with one end resting on its base and the other on the front wall of the primary ram 118. Upon rotation of the drive 120 by a reversible motor 127 the secondary ram 124 moves forward and the primary ram 118 is moved forward by the compression spring.
