Abstract

A bending machine having a hammer and an anvil between which strip steel may be placed for bending, and means for moving the hammer towards and away from the anvil is characterized in that an electrically-operable control arrangement is provided for controlling said means to cause the hammer to reciprocate repetitively whereby to cause a series of hammer blows to be effected on said strip in order to provide a bend therein. Strip steel having one or both edges sharpened is bent by repeated blows from a tool 6, carried by a reciprocating hammer 4, co-operating with a tool 5 on an anvil 3, the mean position of the stroke and the length of the stroke of the hammer being so controlled that the bend is formed gradually by a series of blows. The strip may be moved slightly between each hammer blow so that the series of hammer blows required to form one bend do not fall in exactly the same place. The hammer 4 is reciprocated by a double-acting hydraulic ram 7 controlled by switches on a platform 17 co-operating with a projection 16 on the ram 7. The position of the platform 17 is controlled by a pedal 60. In one mode of operation of the machine successive depression and relaxation of the pedal 60 in conjunction with the operation of a switch (33), Fig. 3, not shown, on the platform 17 by the projection 16 causes the hammer to reciprocate. In a second mode of operation of the machine for continuous automatic reciprocation a foot switch (26), Fig. 6, (not shown), is depressed to de-energize switch (33) and activate switches (27), (32) on the platform 17, the length of stroke being adjusted by adjusting the switch (27) and the mean position of reciprocation by moving the platform 17 by the pedal 60.
