Abstract

1,229,961. Cooling I. C. engines, axial-flow fans. ROBERT BOSCH G.m.b.H. June 26, 1968 [July 1, 1967], No.30372/68. Headings F1B and F1C. [Also in Division F4] The radiator 3 of a liquid cooled vehicle engine is provided with a cooling unit comprising a cylindrical shroud 6 mounted on the radiator and containing a fan driven by a thermostatically controlled motor 8. The motor 8 is supported by struts 9 and is encircled by the hub 12 of the fan. Coolant from the engine block enters a housing 19 through a pipe 24 and is directed to the radiator through a pipe 26 and/or to a radiator by-pass 25 according to the position of two valve members mounted on a shaft 27 which is moved by a thermostat 21. If further cooling is required when the by-pass is fully closed, the shaft 27 moves further to close contacts mounted on two conductors 28 and 29 thereby energizing the fan motor either directly or via a relay. The cooling unit may be located on the front or the rear face of the radiator.
