1,229,936. Bituminous articles. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 20 Sept., 1968, No. 44824/68. Heading C3N. A structural element is made by (a) mixing bituminous binder and aggregate, (b) compacting to 80-98% of theoretical density, (c) heatcuring at 212-500‹ F. for 4-32 hours, in the absence of a moist atmosphere, (d) contacting with a moist atmosphere at 212-500‹ F. for 1-80 hours, and (e) cooling to ambient temperature, in the moist atmosphere. The mixture formed in (a) may be similar to the compositions of Specification 1,123,101. An exemplified aggregate is sand + limestone. Step (b) may be performed at ambient or elevated temperature. The total pressure during step (d) is preferably 1-30 atmospheres absolute. The moist atmosphere may be 25-100% saturated with water; it may be steam at 225-300‹ F. at 15 p.s.i.g. Step (d) can form a continuation of step (c). Step (e) may be performed in the moist atmosphere. There may be, e.g. 5-30 weight per cent asphalt based on the aggregate.
